Reflective Narrative:
From late August 2018 to July 2019 I was able to experience living abroad in Japan at Nagoya University of Foreign Studies in Aichi Prefecture. By the time the semester officially started I was unsure of what to expect for my classes as NUFS had just changed their curriculum for international students. After taking a placement test students who were placed in lower level grammar classes could choose between a semi-intensive grammar course or an intensive course; semi-intensive classes would meet twice a week for an hour and a half while intensive courses met Monday through Thursday for four hours each day. I chose to take the intensive 200 level grammar course during the fall with the intention of taking one of the 300 level grammar courses in the spring upon passing the 200 level class. This lower level grammar class alongside a kanji class completed my class schedule for the fall, however my spring semester contained many more culture based classes. The culture classes I enrolled in included Japanese Education, Traditional Japanese Art and Culture, Japanese Culture Through Commercials, and China and Japan: Language.
